SongBurst - The Complete Lyric Game - 50s & 60s Edition - Board Game - NEW

Description: Two or three teams attempt to complete lyrics from popular songs of the '50s and '60s. Players are given the year, the artist, the song title and the first two or three words; if nobody can get it, then more words are revealed. THE CONCEPT The concept of play is really quite simple.. two TEAMS (maybe three) attempt to complete lyrics from popular songs. After hearing the first few words from a snatch of lyric, can your TEAM complete the lyric? THE BASICS 1. Open the box. (Too basic? Okay, we’ll skip ahead a bit) 4. Begin by dividing the players into two TEAMS. The only area of balance you need to consider when forming TEAMS is age. Both TEAMS will want to have players who remember the songs being "played." In the event that you have nine players or more, you may want to have a third TEAM ...but no more than three TEAMS! 5. THE "D.J." - For each round, one Player will serve as the D.J. who will select the song to be played and control game play during that round. The D.J. is a member of one of the TEAMS, but temporarily sits out and runs the game. Since the D.J. is missing from his or her TEAM for that round, you may temporanly have uneven TEAMS, but that situation will even itself out. In plain English, the job of D.J. alternates from one TEAM to the other all through the game! 6. Decide which TEAM goes first. This is real simple stuff, and in the long run is not critical to winning, so don’t fight! 7. Each TEAM places a token on the gameboard Start space. The D.J. pulls the first card from the card box. 8. THE CARDS At the top of the card is the DATE, the name of the GROUP or ARTIST who made the song popular, and the TITLE of the song. The D.J. reads all of this information aloud for all Players on both TEAMS to hear. "1956...E!vis Presley...BLUE SUEDE SHOES" Toward the bottom of the card is a colored box which shows the entire TARGET LYRIC written out. To win this SONG, one TEAM will have to sing this entire TARGET LYRIC...as shown...correctly. Keep in mind that the lyrics are not necessarily from the beginning or the chorus of each song. Any verse, from any part of the song, may be used. SongBurst Fig 1 9. PLAYING THE GAME At the start of play, decide whether everyone will play the red or blue cards for that game (it doesn’t matter, both the blue and the red sides have the same mix of 50’s and 60’s songs) TEAM A (the TEAM going first) will hear the first two or three words (as shown next to the "3" on the card). "Well it’s one..." If TEAM A can match the TARGET LYRIC after hearing just those first few words, TEAM A wins this song. But if TEAM A cannot match the TARGET LYRIC from Just those few words, then TEAM B is given a few more words (as shown on the CARD), and has a chance to win the SONG by successfully completing the TARGET LYRIC. Oh, one very important point... order to win the SONG a TEAM absolutely must sing no matter how off-key, no matter how many dogs may howl. 10. THE RECORDS When a TEAM correctly sings a TARGET LYRIC, they receive one BLACK RECORD. Whenever a TEAM has collected three BLACK RECORDS, they exchange them for one GOLD RECORD. Whenever a team has collected three GOLD RECORDS they exchange them for one PLATINUM RECORD. At the end of the game the TEAM with the most PLATINUM RECORDS wins. 11. MOVING The "3" or "2" or "1" designators on each card represent the number of spaces a TEAM may move ahead on the board if they win the SONG. For example, if a TEAM matches the TARGET LYRIC after hearing the first line of words, they move ahead 3 squares on the board. Obviously the more lyrics heard the fewer moves won. The TEAM who reaches the FINISH LINE first receives an extra GOLD RECORD The GAME ends when the FIRST TEAM reaches the FINISH LINE 12. 50’s & 60’s POP TRIVIA When landing on a "?" space, a POP TRIVIA CARD is drawn from the card box. (POP TRIVIA CARDS can be recognized by the stripes on the top of each card and the checkerboard pattern.) The team who lands on the space is then asked the question appearing on the card. If your team is leading: A correct answer means you stay where you are. A wrong answer means you go back one space. If your team is behind. A correct answer means you move forward one space. A wrong answer means you stay where you are. Whatever move results, game play resumes with the next song. 13. MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWERS - This is important STUFF!!! Let’s face it, periodically a TEAM will be real close to the exact TARGET LYRIC, but won’t get it perfectly. If the answer given is one or two words off (in any way), the D.J. announces: "I have a MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWER." This means that the answer given is close enough to win the song unless the other TEAM can give an answer that is closer to the exact TARGET LYRIC. If the other TEAM does come closer, then that team steals the record and the points. If a TEAM’s answer is three words off (or more), then it does not qualify as a MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWER, and the D.J. doesn’t say anything. Play continues until the correct lyric is given. Here’s an example based on the CARD shown in the rules: TEAM A sings, "Well it’s one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready now go, go, go." The D.J. announces, "I have a MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWER." (That’s because it’s really "go cat go", but the D J doesn’t say what is wrong.) TEAM B sings, "Well it’s one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready now go CAT go". Since TEAM B was more correct, it is awarded the RECORD and POINTS, and the game continues. Remember, the TEAM that is challenging a MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWER must be closer to the TARGET LYRIC. If both TEAMS give one word wrong, then the TEAM that was MARGINALLY CORRECT gets the CARD. This whole concept of MARGINALLY CORRECT ANSWERS will come into play quite often, and it requires the current D.J. to keep control of the game. NOTE: No matter which TEAM wins points, the first chance switches from one TEAM to another each turn. This means that a TEAM could win points, and then be "in control" on the very next song, because it is that TEAM’s turn to go first. Winning the game is the result - not the object - of play. The goal is to have a good time. There are a lot of memories we all associate with music and the times we remember. That’s the experience meant to be enjoyed when playing SONGBURST! NOW "GO CAT GO!"
