The map extends from Peru to the Strait of Magellan. The map shows parts of Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina. There is a lot of details in the map, as the indian tribes, and the villages.On the map are represented the routes of the navigators of the 17th and 18th century, as Magellan, Sarmiento, de la Roche, de Halley and Sharp. There is a ship in the Atlantic Ocean to the right side, showing the end of the voyage of Amerigo Vespucci in 1502 near the coasts of Brazil. Near the ship, a swan showing the multitude of animals present in this region. In extrem south, the land discovered by F. Drak (Francis Drake), the Drake passage between Cap Horn and Shetland islands, and the strait of Le Maire.On the left side, an inset text depicting the history of Chile, Paraguay, and the "terre Magellanique". Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor. His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition. This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.Henri Chatelain represents the golden age of French cartography.
