St Thomas Aquinas is a Doctor of the Church; he was a gifted theologian and philosopher who lived during the 13th century. Educated in many disciplines including the natural sciences and logic, Philosophy, Mathematics, Astronomy, Music, and many others, his intelligence and learning was phenomenal. As a young child of 5 he was constantly asking "What is God?" and thereafter sought the answer to his question. He resolved to enter religious life and joined the Order of St Dominic. His family did not approve, and he was imprisoned by them for two years, during which time they tried to corrupt his soul by sinful temptations and other means. He prayed for help and was eventually triumphant; his family relented and returned him to the Dominicans, who were amazed to discover that he had continued his studies even during imprisonment. His life is full of studying, preaching, traveling and writing - his Summa Theologica is still appreciated today - so gifted was his brilliant mind. A fitting patron of schools and colleges, students of any age, theologians, philosophers, apologists and book sellers.
