Thomas AQ AB Angelis Praecinctus" which translates to "S. Thomas Aquinas Supported By Angels." The back of the medal shows St Thomas and St Catherine of Siena kneeling in front of the Virgin Mary who is holding Jesus on her lap. Both saints are receiving rosaries from Mary. The Latin inscription around the edge reads " Regina Sacratissimi Rosarii Ora Pro Nobis" which translated means "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Pray for Us." St Thomas was the son of the wealthy Count of Aquino from Italy. He secretly became a Dominican friar in 1244. When his family found out, they kidnapped him and held him alone for a year to "deprogram" him; but as soon as they let him go, he rejoined his order. He studied in Paris and taught theology at the University of Paris. He wrote several books and is known for bringing Greek wisdom and scholarship methods an applying them to the study of Christianity. He was made a doctor of the church in 1567. The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
