Stilt Legged Crane Fly Water Bubbles Enhydros in Dominican Amber Fossil 7.6 g

Description: This large, 7.6 gram, fully polished amber fossil prepared from all-natural, authentic Dominican amber from the mines in the Dominican Republic contains a rare, stilt-legged Tipulid fly with very long legs with a group of ancient water bubbles or enhydros with a trapped, moving air bubble inside from an ancient tropical forest. This particular fly has exceptionally long legs! Tipulid flies belong to the Family Tipulidae and are commonly referred to as 'crane' flies and resemble mosquitoes in appearance but were not blood sucking. Enhydros are water bubbles that contain trapped air bubbles that can be seen moving as the piece is turned. Geological studies have dated the water in these enhydros to be between 17 and 20 million years old. The piece itself weighs 7.6 grams and has approximate dimensions of 3.5 cm length, 2.5 cm width, and 0.95 cm height. NOTE: 2.5 cm is approximately 1 inch. Please see my feedback. Dominican amber comes from one island source: the Dominican Republic which shares the island with Haiti and the supply is much smaller than that of Baltic amber which has been mined for centuries and now is mass mined as opposed to Dominican material which has been mined for only decades with picks and hammers by candlelight. The saltwater test claims that real amber will float in saltwater while fake amber will sink.However, many amber sources or even specimens will not float in saltwater as their botanical (plant) composition as well as fossil inclusions are such that they are more dense than saltwater and so sink.
