Through it, readers could learn about the man who now wanted to lead the nation by taking an in-depth (if idealized) view of him as a soldier and military leader. CONDITION VG to VG+ Antiquarian. This is a really excellent book that would be nearly Fine if not for the very faint but persistent dampstain at the top margin. Otherwise it's in fabulous condition. Brilliantly blindstamped covers with Grant's signature in gold, lovely spine with intact head/tail. Strong joints. Inside, strong hinges, textblock complete including original endpapers. Textblock is tightly bound with nothing sprung or loose. Pages are bright, and of higher quality than usual for the period -- a sign that this book was part of a political strategy. In the end, Grant's presidency is not remembered kindly. A Reconstruction that was cut off prematurely, leading to nearly a century of Jim Crow laws and segregation; financial crises; and political scandal all sullied Grant's post-military career.
