Description: Fans of the 1984 Barry Levinson film starring Robert Redford should be careful reading the original 1952 novel by Bernard Malamud; the film follows the novel fairly closely right up until the end, but the end of the film diverges significantly (and controversially) from that of the novel. For the uninitiated, The Natural is the story of Roy Hobbs, a baseball wunderkind whose career is sidelined in his youth by a tragic injury. He returns to the game later in life and has various baseball-related adventures that culminate in various different ways depending on whether you are watching the film or reading the book. For sale here is a copy of the International Collectors Library edition of The Natural. The ICL was produced by Doubleday and offered inexpensive reprints of classic texts -- comparable in structure and format to Random House's Modern Library imprint. These copies are designed to look like classic leather-bound premium texts; the exterior boards are "leatherette" (faux leather) and have (purportedly) real 14K gold leaf appliqué. Here are the condition notes: Good used condition. Exteripr has moderate edge and corner wear but presents well. 24K gold leaf appliqué is in good condition. Corners are bumped/rounded. Boards are faux black leather. Binding is tight and intact throughout. Interior is clean and unmarked with white pages. Discoloration / foxing on exterior page edges.
