Description: Published by Random House (New York 1938). First Edition stated, with frontispiece photograph of Jeffers by Edward Weston that was not included in later printings and jacket photograph by Horace Lyon; dust jacket with original $3.50 price on front flap. xviii + 622 pp. Inscribed by Jeffers to actor Roland Young "with great pleasure in seeing him here again," and dated December 1938. A snapshot of Jeffers standing in the doorway of Hawk Tower had been taped to the front endpaper. The tape dried out and its remnants are still on the endpaper; the photo is still present, but unattached. The book has been read, and the pages and spine are darkened, but the book is otherwise unmarked. The jacket is also age-darkened, particularly on the spine and around the edges; a dampstain affects the rear cover and the rear flap; and a small chip is missing at the top of the front. Overall, somewhere between Very Good and Near Fine. In an age before book tours were the norm, people who wanted their books signed by Jeffers usually had to take their books to his home near Carmel, California. Most of those people were more readers than collectors, and consequently (as here) far more often than not books inscribed by Jeffers were read by the recipients rather than stored away unused.
