Carlo Pellegrini (1839-1889), Italian-born and educated caricaturist who immigrated to London, England, in 1864, and became the first caricaturist for Vanity Fair, using the nom de crayon initially of "Singe' and later of "Ape", and remained there from January 1869 to April 1889, producing 332 caricatures. He died in 1889 of Lung disease. Archibald Forbes (1838-1900), the subject of this print, was born in Morayshire, Scotland, to a minister of the Scottish Church, was educated at the University of Aberdeen, and, interested in becoming a war correspondent, enlisted in the Royal Dragoons, during which service he began writing for the Morning Star and had articles accepted by Cornhill Magazine. while enlisted in the Royal Dragoons. After leaving the army in 1867, he founded London Scotsman, a weekly paper that he ran from 1867 to 1871. While reporting from the siege of Metz in 1870, he helped to establish the use of the telegraph for war reporting. This development truly established his long and very successful career as a war correpondent from such outposts as India, Serbia, Turkey, Afghanistan, Mandalay, and South Africa, and he was unafraid of passing judgment on difficult military operations. He was a prolific author beyond his daily correspondence, including autobiographical sketches. He died at Regent's Park, London, in March 1900. Print is in Very Good Plus Condition: very light horizontal crease; upper margin corners lightly soiled; tiny tear right margin. The illustration itself is clean and bright.
