Nor is it just a member of the Tyrannosaur family like Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus or Daspletosaurus. No. This is the real thing. Tyrannosaurus rex. Here is a small but superb piece of leg bone from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was found in the Hell Creek Formation, near Newell, Butte County, South Dakota, about 20 miles north of Sturgis. There were a large number of pieces found in the same exact site, of a T-Rex. The specimen measures about 1.35 inches (34.4 mm). From the late Cretaceous, 66 to 68 million years ago. The last great Age of the Dinosaurs. There are hundred of porous holes called Trabecular. Trabecular or Trabecular bone was the porous bone on the inside of weight-bearing bones of many of the dinosaurs. It allowed for the bone to maintain its strength, while lowering the weight of the bone. This allowed the dinosaur to run faster and farther. Many dinosaurs had trabecular bone cells, but T rex is famous for having some really great trabecular, as you can see in this piece. No paint or restoration has been applied. Tyrannosaurus Rex was king of the predators in the Hell Creek Formation. The name Tyrannosaurus means "Tyrant Lizard" in Greek, and Rex means "King" in Latin. It could grow to 40 feet, and had the strongest bite of any land animal ever.We invite you to visit our store.
