Unequal Opportunity: Health Disparities Affecting Gay and Bisexual Men in the Un

Description: Unequal Opportunity by Richard J. Wolitski, Ron Stall, Ronald O. Valdiserri This book reviews evidence of health disparities among gay and bisexual men, identifying individual and community factors that have contributed to these disparities, and suggests strategies for public health efforts to eliminate inequality in the future. FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description Most public health students, academics, and practitioners recognise the association between racial/ethnic minority status and the disproportionate burden of preventable disease in the USA. Much less attention has been directed, however, towards the health disparities that affect gay and bisexual men. These disparities affect the lives of an estimated 5.3-7.4 million American men, and are an important concern for public health. Until very recently, the relativeinvisibility of this group and a paucity of empirical data have hampered attempts to identify health disparities experienced by gay and bisexual men. This book proposes to review and synthesize evidence of health disparities among gay and bisexual men, identify individual and community factors thatcontribute to these disparities, and articulate strategies for public health efforts to eliminate disparities. To date, these disparities have largely been discussed in isolation in the research literature in a manner that does not permit a comprehensive examination of these problems, their underlying causes, and potential solutions. Thus, a primary emphasis of the book will be to document health disparities among gay and bisexual men while also describing public health solutions to thesechallenges. Author Biography Richard Wolitski is Community Psychologist and Team Leader of the Community Interventions Research Team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ron Stall is Medical Anthropologist and Chief of the Prevention Research Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. RonaldValdiserri is Deputy Director of the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I would definitely recommend moving forward with this book project."--Daniel Gentry, Ph.D., M.H.A., Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy Dept. of Health Management and Policy, St. LouisUniversity"[T]his compilation and review is both helpful and timely. The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as established researchers and public health practitioners...[and] provides good coverage of the primary health issues and subpopulations of concern and will serve as a guide and reference on health disparities among gay and bisexual men for researchers and students in a variety of academic disciplines, as well aspractitioners and policy makers, for years to come."--Doodys, a 4-star review!
