USS De Soto: This 253' steam powered side-wheel powered fast gunboat was converted from a passenger ship that was built in New York in 1859 and was purchased by the US Navy in August 1861. First assigned to the Gulf Blockading squadron, her speed made her an effective pursuit ship. She would capture or bring about the destruction of eighteen blockade runners during the Civil War. She also served in the Western and Eastern Blockading Squadrons. After the war she served the Navy in South American waters until 1868 when she was resold to her original owners and was in private commercial service until 31 Dec 1870 when she caught fire, was grounded and burned to the waterline (CTL). See her web pages for the details of her design, construction, conversion and service history, including battle narratives. Seller has over 50 different Civil War Ship covers.
