Great clean mid-century style! When it was launched in 1977 it immediately won the British Design Council Award for that year. What marks this design out is the combination of glazed and unglazed surfaces, using a special unglazed stoneware body which Hornsea called Vitramic. This gave an added tactile feel to the already interesting surface design of moulded radiating circles and ovals. The inside is glazed, with just the center circle on the outside glazed, the rest left matt. The design was by Martin Hunt and David Queensberry (who had a design partnership from 1966 to 1999 and worked for a number of ceramic firms). The Victoria & Albert Museum in London (the world's leading design museum) has a number of examples of the Concept range in its collection as well as on display in the Ceramics Study Galleries. The finish – a rich cream colour – was unique. In its crisp but subtle surface relief, 'Concept' exploited the design possibilities afforded by 'vibrating polishing' (vibrating the piece in a container loaded with ceramic pellets). It was produced on lisence at Upsala Ekeby’s Rorstand factory in Sweden. With Concept, Hornsea’s stylish tableware easily competed with contemporary Scandinavian ceramics.
