On 23 September 1964, the 498th Medical Company was activated as an air ambulance company at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and deployed to Vietnam in 1965 where it was assigned to USARV. Its mission was to cover II CTZ. It was reassigned to the 43rd Medical Group, 1st Logistical Command in September 1965. Its 1st major engagement involved an attack on the Special Forces camp at PLEIME on 19 October 1965, a prelude of the VietCong plan to cut South Vietnam in half...Upon return to the states in October 1971, the unit was relocated to Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Stewart, GA and Fort Benning, GA and has remained in service at Ft.
