Description: Here is a failed power supply board from my very first PC - an original 28-pound Compaq "sewing machine" Portable. This was one of the very first systems shipped by Compaq in 1983. This classic model originally came with two floppy drives and 128KB of RAM. The previous owner was so fond of her original Compaq Portable that she would not give it up when she needed a PC that was a generation or two newer. In 1988, she brought it to a large computer store in Chicago that should have known better, but they a) pulled one of the floppy drives and installed a 5.25" Seagate 30MB RLL hard drive and controller, b) upgraded the BIOS and maxxed out the RAM on the motherboard to 640KB, c) added an Intel Inboard 386 to plug into the 8088 socket in order to use a 16MHz 386DX processor and 1MB of additional RAM (36 chips) on that long board. Needless, to say, the original 63W power supply was overtaxed. My friend noticed that the green CRT monitor was wiggling as a sign that the power supply was on its last legs. He noticed how determined the lady who brought it to us was to sell it, while it still booted up and gave a display. Compaq did not make it easy to swap the power supply board in and out of their original Portable or Portable Plus, but I was able to replace the power supply at least three times, the last two with a 135W board made by PC Power and Cooling. However, this is the original one, with a 1982 copyright date silkscreened on it. I've had it hanging on the wall of my basement for quite a few years, and am now selling it in as-failed condition, for repair, parts, or as a piece of art. Local pickup in zip code 60438 is free. I offer free USPS shipping to any US zip code, but do not offer a return privilege on this item.
