Description: Vintage Dazey 4-Quart Butter Churn with Vintage Owens-Illinois Duraglas Jar. A really nice Dazey Butter Churn and vintage jar. The age is unknown, but I know this style of churn with the removeable filter screen was made after the patent date of February 4, 1922. It could have been made anytime during the 1920s, 30s, or 40s. Here is everything I know about this churn and jar.The jar and churn mechanism (lid) likely did not originally come together. They were paired up, likely after the original jar from Dazey broke. The jar is round and was made by the Owens Illinois Glass Company. The jar is marked with raised embossed markings on the heel (bottom edge) and bottom. The heel is marked on two sides with "DURAGLAS" in script. The bottom of the jar is marked with the old Owen-Illinois Logo (1929 to 1954), date and factory codes, and the model number of the jar. The factory code is 20, indicating either Brakenridge, PA or Oakland, CA (likely Oakland, CA). The date code appears to be "1" indicating it was made in a year ending in 1, likely either 1931, 1941, or 1951. It is likely either 1941 or 1951, however, single digit date codes were mostly used in the 1930s and 1940s, suggesting this may be from 1941. It is also thick glass, suggesting pre-war. The model number appears to be "3481-C." The "C" as a suffix rather than a prefix suggests it was a west coast factory (Oakland, CA). Owens-Illinois began making glass in Oakland in 1936.The jar is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks. There are some scratches on the bottom indicating it is old.The lid is a shiny white metal with very little rust (likely stainless steel, it is magnetic). The lid has the removable filter screen in place with the wire spring holder. It is removed easily. The churn handle mechanism is cast iron and is riveted to the lid in three places with steel rivets (I checked with a magnet). The cast iron is painted with silver paint. The paint appears to be original. The churn handle is a D-shape with the grip on one side and the crank handle on the other side. The main frame of the churn mechanism is marked with the word "DAZEY" on the top on both sides, a daisy flower in the middle on both sides, and "40B" where the crank shaft enters the main frame. The crank handle is marked "30-40 H" (I assume this means it was interchangeable with the No. 30 and No. 40?).The wood handle on the crank appears original and is in very good condition. The large vertical gear is marked "34C" on one spoke and 4 dots on another spoke (I don't know what the 4 dots mean) and is held onto the crank shaft by a square headed set screw. There is a small oil hole in the main frame where the crank shaft is.The paddle shaft is steel. The wood paddle has two paddles and is in very good condition. In 1922, Nathan Dazey patented a removable strainer screen in the screw-cap top of his glass churns. A 1922 ad claimed that the screen “enables the operator to make and wash the butter free of milk right in the churn without once removing the dasher.” Explaining the process, the ad continued: “Simply pour in the milk and churn. Then drain off milk thru strainer, lift off strainer and pour in water thru opening. After washing butter, the water is then drained off thru strainer, and butter is ready to salt.” This churn is in excellent condition. Please see the description above and the photos. It would make a great display piece or useable to make your own butter.
