By the 19th century, the use of coffin plates began to gain popularity in North America.The plates, which might be made of many different types of cast or hammered metal such as brass, polished tin, pewter, silver-plate and even solid silver, were engraved with the name and dates of the deceased and sometimes with an emblem or short motto like “Baby” or “At Rest” (in this case, “Our Darling”). The plate might be left on the coffin, to be buried, or might be removed by the undertaker before the burial and given to the family.Casket plate measures approximately 4.7 inches long by 2.2 inches wide.Plate has two small holes on either side for mounting, as pictured.In good condition for its age, with no noticeable flaws.
