Description: Hello and welcome to the House of Chrome. You are looking at a rare and unique 1930's / 40's era Electro Voice model Fifty carbon microphone made in South Bend, Indiana. This was a very common design for it's time though the model 50 was a smaller carbon mic compared to the much larger carbon mics of it's era. It comes with the all metal period octagon Bud model ring and equally beautiful Bud model desk stand. This classic style of microphone was made by several American companies before disappearing altogether around the late 1930's to late 1940's. These early microphones were suspended with springs used as a primitive shock mount before the industry converted to other forms of internal padding to keep unwanted feedback to a minimum. The spring mics had a good run though for about 20 years before eventually being phased out. Pic # 2 shows this very model in my E.V catalog with a few other carbon mics being offered. Like crystal and ceramic microphones these carbon mics also needed specialized audio equipment to operate. While this mic is 100% complete I do not have the proper audio equipment to test it so I can only assume that it still works? i have no idea if so. Lets assume it doesn't to be on the safe side. This spring mic is in very good overall physical condition considering it's age as seen in the pictures provided. The model 50 element shows very lite paint loss but has never been disassembled. Again, it has all of it's original components. The three cable screw connectors are still present on this mic and could be rewired if you know the correct diagram. I would rate this mic an easy 7 on a scale of 1 -10. The mic comes with older original matching steel springs too which is pretty rare to find these days. They show almost no wear and work perfectly keeping the mic perfectly centered. The mic comes with an all metal American (Bud Radio model) Octagon ring that is period to the mic. The ring is pot metal and comes with original black paint which looks very nice. No paint chips either or fractures. The Octagon ring is quite large as well. The stand is a period matching Bud Radio 817 model and works very well providing a stable heavier platform making it very hard to knock the mic over. Very appealing to the eye as well with it deco three tier "waterfall" design. The base is cast iron and has virtually no wear. It should be noted that there is a fracture on the top of the Hexagon ring. It does not affect the operation of the mic in any way but it should be pointed out. I'll package the mic very well so nothing breaks during shipment. The actual model 50 element is only 3 inches across and the measurements with stand and ring are 9 inches in height X 5 inches wide. If you are a serious collector of vintage Americans mics then you know what a unique mic this is. She'll make an awesome display piece anywhere it sits in the home, studio or office. And as always... I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period. Check my rating. International buyers are welcome as well. Buyer must pay within 24 hours or an unpaid case will be opened and item relisted. Domestic buyer will get priority shipping. If you have any questions feel free to ask and...thanks for looking.
