Description: Wood & Sons Serving Plate & 6 Desserts Cobalt Blue Gold 1931-1936 Grafton #4774 Exquisite Decorative Hand Painted SMOOTH RIM SQUARE IRONSTONE Set of LARGE Serving PLATE w/6 Dessert PLATES from WOOD & SONS, Grafton #4774 Pattern, FLORAL BOUQUETS from Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1931-1936 DESCRIPTION: The beautiful smooth rimmed set of 7 ironstone square plates was hand painted in a striking multi-color palette on high white genuine ironstone. The floral bouquets in their cartouches and the center medallion look so bold with their vivid enameled colors. The rim is beautifully trimmed in a gold as is the wide, vibrant cobalt blue color band which has gold cross hatching. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is excellent. The serving plate has three very minor, shallow flakes on the back rim. One dessert plate has an even smaller flake off the back rim. None of these show on the front. Another dessert plate has a small amount of debris on the front near the rim. This was painted over at the factory. Several of the plates have very light crazing. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks and minor, age appropriate wear to the gold. There is none of the usual light browning that is associated with the crazing. Please view the full frontal photos to see just how good each plate is. DIMENSIONS: The square serving plate is 8 1/2" with a height of 3/4". Each square dessert plate is 5 1/4" with a height of 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Absalom Wood established his business in 1865. Later, Absalom Wood and his son T. F. Wood established Wood & Son Pottery in Burslem, England in 1885. This changed to Wood & Sons in 1907, then Wood & Sons, Ltd in 1910. Harry F. Wood succeeded his father, T. F. Wood, as chairman in 1921 and under his management Wood & Sons Ltd became a large and successful earthenware manufacturer. Associated companies included H. J. Wood Ltd (at the Alexandra Pottery, Burslem), Bursley Ltd (later renamed Susie Cooper Pottery Co. Ltd, at the Crown Pottery, Burslem) and the Ellgreave Pottery Co. Ltd (Ellgreave St, Burslem). The business went into receivership in December 1981 and was sold to members of the Yorke family. Under its new owners, the business traded as Wood & Sons (1982) Ltd until its closure in 1995. The Woods Burslem England mark was used 1931-1936. The source for this mark #4291 is cited in Geoffrey A. Godden’s Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. These also have the British registration #753689 which was issued in 1930, further confirming the circa date. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
